Returning to yoga after a long gap: what to expect

Most people who return to yoga after a gap of several months or more expect to pick up roughly where they left off. The body has other ideas. This article is about what actually happens when you come back, and how to approach the first few sessions in a way that does not end in frustration or injury.
What changes in the body during a gap
Flexibility decreases more quickly than most people expect. After two or three months without practice, poses that were accessible tend to feel noticeably different. This is not a failure of the practice. It is simply how connective tissue responds to reduced use. The good news is that it returns relatively quickly once practice resumes, usually faster than it was built in the first place.
Strength changes more slowly in both directions. The muscular engagement required for standing poses and arm balances tends to persist longer than flexibility. Students returning after a gap often find that their strength is closer to where it was than their range of motion.
The first session back
The most common mistake in the first session back is trying to match what you could do before the gap. This leads to pushing into ranges of motion that the body is not ready for, which produces soreness and sometimes minor strain. A better approach is to treat the first session as an orientation, regardless of how long you have been practising.
The Foundation Class at Peregrine Bastion is the right starting point for returning students as well as beginners. It is taught on the assumption that everyone in the room is encountering the poses fresh, which means the instruction is specific and the adjustments are real.
The Autumn Reset Programme as a re-entry point
The six-week Autumn Reset Programme was designed with returning students in mind. The sessions are shorter than the regular classes, the pace is slower, and the weekly lifestyle check-in addresses the habits that support practice between sessions. Several students who joined the programme in 2024 had not practised for over a year. By the end of the six weeks, most had moved into the regular class schedule.
If you are returning after a gap and are not sure which format suits you, the quiz on this site is a useful starting point, and the contact form is there if you want to ask directly.
Coming back is the only thing that matters. The Autumn Reset Programme runs through October and November and is open to returning students at any level.
